Drug Usage[edit]
- Reduce risk of stroke and systemic embolism in nonvalvular atrial fibrillation
- Prevent deep vein thrombosis (DVT) and pulmonary embolism (PE) after hip or knee replacement surgery
- Reduce risk of recurrent DVT and PE
Mechanism of Action[edit]
Direct Factor Xa inhibitors is a selective clotting factor Xa (FXa) inhibitor, preventing the formation of blood clots

Oral
Dosages[edit]
- Nonvalvular atrial fibrillation: 5 mg orally twice daily
- DVT/PE prevention after surgery: 2.5 mg orally twice daily
- DVT/PE treatment: 10 mg orally twice daily for 7 days, then 5 mg twice daily
- Reduce risk of recurrent DVT/PE: 2.5 mg orally twice daily

- Vomiting blood or vomit that looks like coffee grounds
Drug Interactions
Interacts with other blood thinners, NSAID, antidepressants, and certain herbal products like St. Johin's wort
Caution
Use with caution in patients at risk of bleeding, or taking concomitant drugs that increase risk of bleeding.
